Time To Bring Your Windmill Planter To Life

Building the Windmill Box

This is the top section that supports the windmill. You’ll need:

  • (4) 12-inch boards (front & back)

  • (2) 6.25-inch boards (sides)

  • (1) 7.25-inch board

  • (1) 7.75-inch board

Rip the 12-inch boards down to 5.25 inches wide and the 6.25-inch boards to 4.5 inches wide. Assemble using pocket hole screws and wood glue, ensuring the structure is sturdy.

Creating the Roof

The roof consists of two overlapping boards, one slightly longer than the other, to form a secure top. Glue and screw them into place to complete the box.

Cutting and Attaching the Legs

For stability, cut four 1x1-inch legs at 59 inches long with an 8-degree angle at the base. To reinforce the structure, add horizontal braces at 12 inches and 30 inches using pre-cut 3/4-inch strips.

Assembling the Windmill Fan

The fan consists of two 32-inch-long supports cut from pickets with 45-degree bevels for proper angling. The blades are cut into thin strips and attached using wood glue and brad nails. Assemble the fan supports by overlapping them at the center, securing them with screws and a dowel rod.

Attaching the Fan to the Windmill

Drill a half-inch hole through the center of the fan support and windmill box. Insert an 8.5-inch dowel rod, securing it with wood glue and screws for a free-spinning motion.

Adding Planter Boxes

For an extra touch, attach planter boxes to the windmill legs:

  • Small box: (3) 21-inch boards, (2) 5-inch sides

  • Large box: (4) 26-inch boards, (2) 10-inch sides Assemble using brad nails and wood glue, then attach to the windmill base.

Final Touches

Once everything is assembled, sand the edges, paint or stain to your preference, and display it proudly! This windmill planter is not only a fantastic conversation piece but also an easy-to-build project that sells well.
